Twinsie Tuesday - Favorite Food

Since this week is Thanksgiving here in the U.S., I decided to create a mani based on my favorite Thanksgiving food.  Not to toot my own horn, but I make a mean sweet potato casserole as my contribution to my family's feast.  It is sweet and I'm constantly told it could almost be considered a dessert!

The topping for my casserole is a combination of crushed corn flakes, pecans, and brown sugar (no marshmallows involved in this casserole!).  For my nails, I decided to do an interpretation of my sweet potato casserole.  I started with a base of Orly Ginger Lily.  To represent the topping, I added some crunched up corn flakes at the cuticle on each nail.

This was definitely a fun mani, and not a for real one.  I hope everyone in the U.S. has a great long holiday weekend and remember what you're thankful for this time of year.  And don't forget to check out the favorite foods of the other Twinsies!

#WNAC2015 - Shattered Glass

Happy Friday!  Today's #WNAC2015 prompt is shattered glass.  This is a new nail art trend that I've seen popping up everywhere in the last month or so, and I like that it was included in this month's prompts.  For the most part, everyone has used opalescent nail foils to create this look.  Since I knew I would not be able to find any in time to do this prompt, I got creative.  I saw on Instagram where someone found tissue paper at Dollar Tree with an opalescent finish.  So, much to the dismay of my fiance, we searched high and low at the Dollar Trees in town, only to come up empty handed.  Instead I ended up with this crazy holo paper instead and decided to go with it!

Since the paper was silver, and I tend to have a difficult time photographing silver, I didn't want to layer it over silver polish.  I decided a dark base color would make the silver paper pop, and went with Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure Navy Baby.  I then cut the holo paper into tiny pieces and applied them haphazardly on my nails trying to fill as much of the blank space as possible.

Yes, this mani is pretty much a hot mess.  It looked cool in real life, and I would definitely wear this to a concert, but not for everyday.  My fiance said it was my "Michael Jackson hand," since it was reminiscent of his sparkly glove.  I would really like to try this technique again some day, but preferably with opalescent paper, since I really like the look of those manis.  Have a great weekend!

Florida Gator Nails - UF vs. South Carolina

Hello!  I'm so glad tomorrow is Friday - this has been an extremely long week!  Today I have my Gator Nails from last weekend, when the Gators faced off against the South Carolina Gamecocks.  For this mani, I started with a base of Parallax Polish Bryant, which I reviewed here.  I then used single chevron nail vinyls on each nail to paint a layer of China Glaze Stoked to Be Soaked and then sprinkled orange glitter on top.

I have to say this mani was a mess to make!  Even though I tried to contain the glitter to just my nails and my workspace, I got glitter everywhere.  I am still finding orange glitter on my face occasionally.  These photos really don't do this mani justice - it was crazy sparkly in the sun and I received several compliments while wearing it.

Overall, it was a pretty good game.  We missed most of while attending a cousin's soccer game, but the Gators won 24-14.  This week we play FAU and my fiance and I will be going.  It's out of the ordinary for us to attend so few football games - this will only be my third this season and my fiance's second!

Twinsie Tuesday - Fall to Winter Transitional

Today will be a quick post since I've been really busy the last few days.  When thinking of shades that really represent both fall and winter I leaned towards jewel tones.  I also wanted to add a bit of sparkle to incorporate a winter/holiday flair.  All I know is now I really want a dress in these colors to wear to a wedding I'm attending next month!

For this mani, I started with a base of Orly Teal Unreal.  Though I did two coats on each nail, I probably could have gotten away with just one.  I then taped off each nail using triangle vinyls from Nails Redesigned and added Azature Platinum Diamond on top.

I had planned on using a sparkly black polish I swore I had, but I couldn't seem to find it!  Luckily, I knew Platinum Diamond would be an easy replacement for a similar look.  Be sure to check out the fall-winter manis that other Twinsies created!

Florida Gator Nails - UF vs Vandy

Since I'm a bit behind on my Gator nail posts, here are my nails for last week's game against the Vanderbilt Commodores.  Vandy has liked to play spoiler against us the last few years, but fortunately we were able to get the win, even though it was pretty ugly.

Last weekend I was sick and feeling uninspired, so I went with a simple mani using a few nail vinyls and a dotting tool.  I started with a base of China Glaze White on White on each nail.  I then used the orange and blue Color Club helmet polishes to create this mani.  I taped off my index, middle, and pinkie nails with a straight vinyl and painted one half orange.  I also painted my ring finger blue, and then went back and added contrasting colored dots on each nail.

Overall, this was a super simple nail design, but it works!  I'm also excited, because we're finally having some fall-like weather here in Florida.  Much better than record-setting 90 degree temps we had the first week of November.  Hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend!

#WNAC2015 - Watercolor Nails

Happy Friday!  Let me start by saying having a day off in the middle of the week really threw me off, so I'm especially glad it's Friday!  Today's prompt for #WNAC2015 is watercolor, another technique I've never tried.  While doing some research, I found this tutorial by Nails by Jema on Youtube, and followed it for creating my own watercolor design.

I actually used the lids off 2-liter soda bottles for creating my watercolor paints (who knew being lazy and not taking out the recycling would pay off?).  I only have fine point Sharpies, so it made this slightly more difficult, but I still think it was easy enough to execute.  I started off with a base of OPI Be There in a Prosecco.  I created my watercolors using blue, purple, and green Sharpies and rubbing alcohol.  I then used a small nail art brush to paint the colors on each nail.

While mine didn't look exactly like Jema's, I was still pleased with the outcome and how easy a technique it is.  It ends up with a really cool marble effect that I've not done before!  I definitely see more water color designs in the future!

Twinsie Tuesday - Inspired by Your Child or Pet

This week's Twinsie Tuesday prompt is inspired by your child or pet.  Since we don't have kids yet, I decided to go with nails inspired by my cats!  Last year I did nails inspired by my older cat, Addy.  This summer we added a new member to the family, with the addition of our new kitten Curie.  I decided since Addy had her moment in the spotlight on the blog, it could be Curie's turn!

Curie is a shorthair siamese mix, and while looking up kitty cat nail art inspiration, I found this mani by Comm Un Reve.  I decided to do something similar since this kitty looked so much like Curie.  I started with a base of Zoya Tove.  I then used OPI My Vampire is Buff, Nails Inc Chelsea Physic Garden, and black acrylic paint for the details.

Here is a look at my baby girl.  She is an absolute terror, but I still love her.  I don't have many great shots of her because she is always moving - we've nicknamed her "White Lightning."  Be sure to check out the other Twinsie's nails!

Twinsie Tuesday - Inspired by Your Favorite Movie

I am very excited to share with you this week's Twinsie Tuesday mani.  This week's theme is inspired by your favorite movie, and my all-time favorite movie is O Brother Where Art Thou?  If you haven't seen it, it is a reinterpretation of Homer's The Odyssey, taking place in Depression-Era Mississippi.  This movie also features one of my favorite soundtracks, as the music plays an important role by helping to tell the story.

My inspiration for this mani was the jumpsuits the main characters (Everett, Pete and Delmar) wear in the beginning of the movie when they initially break out of the chain gang.  This can also be seen on the cover of the movie.  The whole movie was actually filmed with a sepia filter, and it was not added later.  This was my reasoning for not doing a perfect black and white striped prison uniform.  I started with a base of OPI My Vampire is Buff.  I then sponged on Ulta Taupe on a Rope randomly on each nail.  Once dry, I added straight vinyls from Nails Redesigned to create the stripes using Sinful Colors Black on Black.

I really love how this turned out, and it turned out exactly how I envisioned.  I could seriously never get tired of this movie and could watch it over and over.  And being the fan girl that I am, I have to include some of my favorite quotes from the movie.  Be sure to check out the other movie-inspired looks from the other Twinsies!

"Well ain't this place a geographical oddity - two weeks from everywhere!"
"You two are just dumber than a bag of hammers!"
"Damn! We're in a tight spot"
"We ain't gonna paddle his little behind.  We're gonna kick it - kick it real hard."
"Cow killer!"
"She R-U-N-N-O-F-T"
"We stumbled upon a whole gopher village."

Florida Gator Nails - UF vs UGA

Hello!  I have an unusual Sunday post for you today.  In an effort to keep a more regular posting schedule, I can always guarantee posts on Tuesday (Twinsie Tuesday) and Friday (#WNAC2015), but I would like to add at least one more post each week, but I'm not going to lock in which day it will fall.  Today, I have my Gator Nails from this weekend's game against Georgia.  Georgia is one of our most bitter rivals and it's always great to beat them - which we were successful of this week!

For this mani, I was trying to do something sort of art deco inspired, but I'm not sure it translated well on the nail.  It looked a lot better in my head!  I started with a base of China Glaze White on White, and then taped off the nail using striping tape and filled in using CG I Sea the Point (blue) and Stoked to be Soaked (orange).  I then went back and added dots.

Fortunately, the Gators were able to hold the Bulldogs to a single field goal (27-3).  We only have to win one more game to guarantee out birth in the SEC Championship game!  I hope everyone had a Happy Halloween and had a great time trick or treating - we actually had trick or treaters last night, the first time in the three years I've lived in Gainesville!
